News From Our Pack Leader

Quarter l is coming to a close and I couldn't
be more proud of the work the students have
accomplished. School is their job right now
and somedays it's hard and other days it's a
breeze. I've watched the relationships grow
between the students and the staff and it's
exciting to see that trust established. We
want all of our students to feel and know that
Scott IS is a safe place for them. We will
emphasize this in more detail during the
month of October as we continue to focus on
the social emotional well being of the
students and our anti-bullying lessons.
If you have any concerns please reach out to
your classroom teacher. They are your first
line to support your child. If more support is
needed we have an amazing counselor. Mr.
Curley. My door is always open to you and I
appreciate the parents who have reached out
to share their thoughts or concerns with me. I
truly believe ifwe work together we will
make Scott the best learning environment it
can be. I look forward to all the possibilities
Quarter 2 will bring.

Sincerely,
Ms. Martinez

Here are some tips from school nurses for staying healthy during cold and flu season:

  • Get Vaccinated: Getting an annual flue vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu.
  • Wash Your Hands: Washing your hands with soap and warm water is the best way to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Cover Your Mouth And Nose: Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and cough into a bent elbow or tissue, not your hands.
  • Stay Home When Sick: Children with a fever should stay home until they are fever free without medication for at least 24 hours.
  • Avoid Close Contact: Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Get Enough Sleep: School-age children should get 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night.
  • Eat A Balanced Diet: Eat a balance diet and stay hydrated to help decrease the chance of headaches and stomachaches.

Modeling Reading

AS KIDS GET TO THE INTERMEDIATE YEARS, WE
SOMETIMES FORGET THAT THEY ARE STILL
"KIDS". MODELING READING AND WRITING IN
FRONT OF YOUR CHILD IS EXTREMELY
IMPORTANT. NO MATTER THEIR AGE, SEVERAL
FACTORS INFLUENCE THEIR READING AND
WRITING GROWTH INCLUDING ATTITUDE,
MOTIVATION, ACCESS AND EXPOSURE.

The Why

EXPLAIN INC WHY WE
READ OR WRITE IS ALSO
ESSENTIAL. FOR
INSTANCE, WE READ TO
FICURE OUT HOW TO DO
SOMETHINC OR LEARN
SOMETHING. WE WRITE
TO THANK SOMEONE FOR
THEIR KINDNESS OR TO
WISH THEM WELL.
MAKING READING AND
WRITINC MATERIALS,
ONES THEY TRULY CARE
ABOUT, READILY
MALIABLE IS KEY.

Resources

REMEMBER, THE POST LIBRARY HAS
ALL KINDS OF BOOKS, AUDIOBOOKS,
ETC. IN ADDITION, EACH STUDENT HAS
ACCESS TO DESTINY DISCOVER WHICH
PROVIDES ALL THE SCHOOL'S PRINT
AND DIGITAL RESOURCES, INCLUDING
EBOOKS, AUDIOBOOKS AND
INTERACTIVE BOOKS.

Happy Reading & Writing

Ms. Brookins Corner

Reading is essential. This month we wanted to share
some ideas that may help you at home with your
child.
1) As the weather begins to get cooler take reading
outside. Audio books are great for hiking or sit
down with a good book under the shade.
2) Pack reading materials in your vehicle. Books,
magazines, maps or pamphlets of places to visit all
spark interest in reading.
3) Play games that require reading. There's nothing
better than a family game night that incorporates
word or vocabulary based games.
We hope you like these suggestions. If you haven't
checked out the school site please do at the link
below. There are many audio books you can choose
from.

Child Find

Child find is the ongoing process used by which DoDEA Schools
seek to identify individuals (from birth to age 21) who are eligible to
receive special education and related services. Because disabling
conditions may appear at any point in a child 's development, it is
important that the Child Find activities continue through all grade
levels. Child Find activities include the dissemination of information
to the public as well as screening, referral , and identification
procedures.
If a parent or guardian has concerns regarding a child's
development or school performance, start by reaching out to the
classroom teacher. The teacher will be able to share data
regarding how your child is performing and if they are meeting the
College and Career Ready Standards for their grade. The teacher
will listen , make recommendations, and may choose to seek
consultation from other professionals in the building to address
any areas of concern. Identification of students with disabilities is a
collaborative approach and parents are a key member of their
child's educational team. Our teachers and staff look forward to
working with our community to meet the ne s of all students .

Counselor Corner

Quarter 1 ends on October 7th. Please make sure your student has

completed all required assignments. Remember, you can always follow

your student's progress through our ASPEN information system.

Students can access ASPEN through ClassLinks. Please contact the

school if you are having an issues with the system.

Our Character Strong word of the month for October is

"responsibility". Students learn that responsibility means doing what

they are supposed to do, taking care of things that belong to them or

someone else, and owning up to their mistakes or inappropriate

choices. They also learn that it's important for them to follow through

with doing the the things they are responsible for.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. All children are entitled

to courteous and respectful treatment by students and staff at a school.

Educators have a duty to ensure that students have a safe learning

environment. Lessons will be presented to the students to distinguish

between bullying, teasing, and other ways of being unkind.

Students can make appointments to see me or stop by when needed. I

encourage parents and guardians to reach out to me with any concerns

you may have. Please contact me at scott.curely@dodea.edu or call me

at (502) 942-3205.

Visitors and Volunteers

For the protection of students and staff, all visitors must report to the school’s front office immediately upon arriving at the school. A visitor is any person (to include parents, sponsors, and legal guardians) not enrolled or assigned to the school requesting entry to the building.

Visitors must provide authorized identification to gain access to the DoDEA school. The visitor will be issued a visitor badge that must be displayed above the waist while on DoDEA school property. The school administrator has the final determination on visitors authorized to be at the school. While on DoDEA school property, visitors may go only to the approved area indicated as their destination when signing in at the school’s front office. Any change to the designated location must be approved by the school’s front office before the visitor can access a different location within the school. When leaving the school, visitors must sign out and return the visitor's badge to the school’s front office.

Classroom Observations

Parents are welcome to visit the school and classrooms to observe the school’s programs for brief periods of time that do not interfere with instruction. Approval by the school administrator is required for this type of visitation.
